ENISA -1st EU Agency to deliver its web content over IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Friday, October 16, 2009 - 11:11 PM
|
 |
The EU Agency ENISA [i.e. the European Network and Information Security Agency] now delivers its web site content over the new Internet protocol IPv6. With this action, ENISA is the first EU Agency to implement the European Commission IPv6 Action Plan. All computer and electronic devices that connect to the web and other online services uses Internet Protocol Addresses. The current Internet Protocol, IPv4, provides a limited number of such addresses. According to estimates will be exhausted by 2011. The new Internet Protocol, IPv6, allows every citizen and organization to have as many Internet Addresses as they need to connect every conceivable device to the Internet: mobile phones, car navigation systems, home appliances, industrial equipment, etc.

OECD member states throw their weight behind IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Thursday, June 19, 2008 - 05:27 PM
|
 |
Representatives of 42 member states in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) issued a declaration in which they expressed their support for the next-generation internet protocol. At its Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy, held in Seoul, Korea, on Wednesday, the organisation said the switch to the new version of IP was necessary to connect billions of people to the internet. IPv4 addresses are quickly running out, so the signatories want to have the new version of the internet protocol, IPv6, adopted quickly. In one of the items in the declaration that is more political than technical, they call on governments and private companies that use a large number of IPv4 addresses to lead the switch over.

An unlimited source of Internet addresses to be on stream in Europe by 2010
Posted by: Jordi on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - 11:01 PM

Increasing demand for Internet based services means that there would not be enough addresses to support this expected growth, if no action is taken. Encouraging internet users and providers to adopt the latest Internet Protocol (IP version 6 or IPv6) will provide a massive increase in address space, much in the same way as telephone numbers were lengthened in the 20th century.

Gov'ts must intervene to end IP address shortage, says OECD
Posted by: Jordi on Monday, May 19, 2008 - 08:13 AM
|
 |
Businesses alone are not doing enough to avert an impending shortage of Internet Protocol addresses, and governments must work with them to secure the future of the Internet economy, according to a report published Thursday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The number of IP addresses, needed for Web sites, servers and PCs to communicate with one another over the Internet, is limited, and almost 85 percent of addresses are now in use. At the current rate of growth, the pool of available addresses will be exhausted by 2011.

EU Commission promotes IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, May 07, 2008 - 12:35 PM
|
 |
Twenty-five per cent of all European users should have the opportunity to use IPv6 by the end of 2010, and should be able to access most of their normal services and content with it. The EU Commission will set this goal in a statement, to be published at the end of May, on the new internet protocol and progress in the net. Detlef Eckert of the General Directorate for Information Society and Media presented the key points of the statement and a related action plan at the RIPE meeting in Berlin. The Commission is joining organisations like the Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE) in calling for rapid action in the face of dwindling reserves of IP addresses.

ARIN Board Advises Internet Community on Migration to IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 - 04:05 AM
|
 |
On 7 May 2007, the ARIN Board of Trustees passed a resolution advising the Internet technical community that migration to a new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6, will be necessary to allow continued growth of the Internet. Internet Protocol defines how computers communicate over a network. IP version 4 (IPv4), the currently prevalent version, contains just over four billion unique IP addresses, which is not enough to last indefinitely. IPv6 is a replacement for IPv4, offering far more IP addresses and enhanced security features. To date, ARIN has performed technical coordination of both versions and has not advocated one over the other.

With the recent development of technologies in wireless access and mobile devices, terminal and network mobility have become an indispensable component of today's Internet vision, and this is likely to continue in the near future, while affecting the way of the whole Internet architecture design. Yet, issues like efficient mobility management and optimizations, locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security and related operational/deployment concerns are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet architecture, its end-to-end principles and business models will require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet.

The IPv6 Day: Bye 6Bone. Hi, IPv6 !
Posted by: Jordi on Tuesday, June 06, 2006 - 01:04 AM

Today 6Bone Operators & Users say bye to the experimental network which allowed, already some years ago, to turn IPv6 into the production space. With the occasion of this virtual celebration, we have a couple of quotes from two key people on this subject: - Bob Fink (6Bone Project): “After more than ten years of planning, development and experience with IPv6, with efforts from all around the world, it is gratifying for me to see the 6Bone phase-out on the 6th of June 2006, having served it's purpose to stimulate IPv6 deployment and experience, leaving IPv6 a healthy ongoing component of the future of the Internet!”
- Brian Carpenter (IBM, co-author of multiple IPv6 RFCs and IETF chair): “It's very encouraging to see IPv6 moving forward both technically and commercially, with its address assignments now routinely managed by the same registries that look after the rapidly diminishing IPv4 address pool. I look forward to the day the Internet reaches ten billion active nodes with public addresses, which will only be possible with IPv6.”

IPv6 provides the necessary basis for realising a global information society and is laying the ground for a convergence process between fix and mobile as well as between data, voice and video through the Internet. Examples of such converging markets includes: transportation, media (Triple play – data, TV and voice), mobile operators (IMS - Internet Multimedia Subsystem), consumer/device market (pervasive computing), defence (network centric warfare. Adopting IPv6 directly rather than passing through a complex and costly migration path is a compelling option for stakeholders in these markets.

Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., said federal agencies will play a key role in leading the country's transition to the upgraded network known as Internet Protocol version 6, or IPv6. Failing to do so would place the United States in a "back-seat position" in the development of the Internet, he said, as China and Europe aggressively move forward with the new standard.

For some years now the general uptake of IPv6 has appeared to be “just around the corner”. Yet the Internet industry has so far failed to pick up and run with this message, and it continues to be strongly reluctant to make any substantial widespread commitment to deploy IPv6. Some carriers are now making some initial moves in terms off migrating their internet infrastructure over to a dual protocol network, but for many others it’s a case of still watching and waiting for what they think is the optimum time to make a move.

IPv6: Is Now the Time?
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, December 07, 2005 - 10:13 PM
|
 |
With the exponential growth of internet services, IPv4, first released in 1981, is becoming outdated. The escalation of corporate intranets, cellular phones with internet access, technology webcasts and file sharing have taken their toll, and there is a need for a greater number of IP addresses. Running IPv6 leverages readers’ existing knowledge of IPv4 and helps apply that knowledge to the newer protocol. According to author Iljitsch van Beijnum, “The intent behind the book is to present a clear view of the aspects to IPv6 that are of interest to those who’ll be running and administrating the protocol, not to bombard the reader with unnecessary details. This means that the book covers the IPv6 specifications to the degree necessary to successfully operate an IPv6 network.”

OCCAID and Consulintel Join Forces to Support Worldwide IPv6 Deployment

Boston, MA. and Madrid, Spain – November 28th, 2005 – The initiative aims to ensure the availability of quality IPv6 transit for ISPs and organizations across the world, with a special focus in the developing countries. This joint effort will help to increase the awareness and earlier adoption of IPv6 among those ISPs and organizations that, for different reasons, still don’t have native IPv6 support from their own upstream providers. Even when IPv6 is already being deployed commercially since the last two years, this is happening at a different rate in different geographies. In some cases, this is due to the insufficient expertise and/or education regarding the importance of the new protocol, while in other cases is a matter of lack of support from the upstream providers, or a combination of both.

Get Ready to Move to the New Internet Based on IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 10:38 PM
|
 |
The IPv6 Forum releases a new study on the Internet Address space consumption produced by Tony Hain, North American IPv6 Task Force Technology Director and IPv6 Forum Fellow. This study demonstrates unequivocally that the address space is melting like ice under the heat of the sun despite strict conservation and assignment measures. We are running into the brick wall a lot faster than assumed by previous studies. 2008 seems to be the year when the Internet address space becomes very hard to get.

IETF63 Review: IPv6
Posted by: Jordi on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 12:10 AM
|
 |
IPv6 work is progressing in many parts of the IETF and the IPv6 working group is slowly moving to its close. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of debate and work going on in many areas. Looking at this IETF, and at the community as a whole, the address assignment plans are the things mostly discussed right now. This is due to the fact that the first real allocations, in accordance with the allocation guidelines, happened last year and have continued at a rather rapid rate. These allocations have been very large and this seems to have triggered people’s attention.

IPv4 Address Space Consumption
Posted by: Jordi on Sunday, October 02, 2005 - 08:04 PM
|
 |
Protocol transitions are never easy, particularly not when they involve something so fundamental as the Internet Protocol (IP). Organizations considering a move to IPv6 must consider many factors when deciding on the timing for such a deployment. One of the first questions that arises is: “When will the IPv4 address space actually run out, forcing us to use IPv6 instead ?” That question is not a new one; it was being asked in the early 1990s when the IPv6 effort was started. Several factors, such as the deployment of Classless Interdomain Routing (CIDR) and Network Address Translation
(NAT), have “delayed the inevitable,” and perhaps led to some complacency on the part of network operators. In this issue we examine the topic of IPv4 address space depletion in more detail. Our main article is by Tony Hain, and it is followed by a response from Geoff Huston and a roundtable discussion with Tony, Geoff, Fred Baker, and John Klensin.

A few days after the autumn start, the past September 22nd, an astronomical phenomenon, especially visible from Madrid, Spain, will happen on October 3rd. We are referring to an annular solar eclipse (over 95% occultation), with an approximate duration of 4 minutes and 11 seconds (longer than in previous occasions), which will start to be visible at 10:55 (Madrid local time). The partial eclipse will start at 9:40 and end at 12:23. The Live!Eclipse project join efforts with Consulintel and with RedIRIS infrastructure and support to allow the webcasting of multiple video streams via Internet, in low, medium and very high definition (up to 33 Mpbs). The higher quality broadcasting will be done with IPv6 multicast and unicast; nevertheless IPv4 unicast and multicast connections will be also offered.

When does an experiment in networking technology become a public utility? Does it happen on a single date, or is it a more gradual process of incremental change? And at what point do you change that way in which resources are managed to admit a broader of public interests? And how are such interests to be expressed in the context of the network itself, in terms of the players, their motivation and the level of common interest in one network?

Comments to WGIG on Draft Working Paper on IP Numbers
Posted by: Jordi on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 08:59 AM

 |
While it is true that IPv6 offers vastly more address space than IPv4, this space is not unlimited and there remain similarities in the way this space needs to be managed. There will continue to be a need for:- a guarantee that addresses used in a public environment will be unique worldwide;
- neutral bodies allocating address space according to documented need and on the basis of policies set by a community of all stakeholders;
- measures to avoid stockpiling or hoarding of IPv6 addresses in anticipation of future gain; and
- an optimum address aggregation by managing IP addresses in a manner consistent with needs of providers, facilitating their services while helping in the optimization of the size of routing tables.
